Eighty per cent of women suffer at least one attack of cystitis, and many have repeated attacks. But there are some simple measures that can help you....
- Drink plenty of fluid every day. Cystitis is caused by bacterial in the bladder, and fluid helps flush them out. preventing them from sticking to the walls of the bladder.
- Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet. One of the most common bacterial causes of cystitis is E coli., which is present in feces. Practice especially proper hygiene after moving your bowels.
- Wash before and after sex. Intercourse tend to push bacteria up the urethra making it easy for them to invade the bladder.
- Don't put off going to the loo. The urine stays in the bladder, the easier it is for bacteria to multiply.
- Using a diaphragm makes you more prone to cystitis because it pushes up the urethra, making it hard to empty the bladder totally.
- Avoid bubble baths, vaginal deodorants and perfumed soaps which can irritate the skin, helping harbour harmful bacteria.
