 Women with  breast cancer  are detected by mammography have better prognosis than women whose cancers are detected through other means. Some patient  that have improved chances may last 10 years after diagnosis.

Although mammograms are becoming more common and they are picking up smaller tumors, doctors traditionally haven't considered the methods cancer detection important in choosing treatments or assessing risk of recurrence.

Most treatment decisions are based on whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, the size of the tumor, the estrogen and progesterone receptor status, and the age of women in the time of diagnosis. The baseline of having mammograms is between 35-40 years old. When you reach 40 you should have a yearly  mammogram.
Prior to examination, patient should avoid taking coffee or other caffeinated drinks, such as colas and teas, to avoid the pain during the session.  Since caffeine  makes the women breast more sensitive.
