Some health authorities are advising against eating raw alfalfa sprouts for young children, pregnat women, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems because raw sprouts have been implicated in numerous outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli infection. The message is loud and clear- consumers must be deligent about thoroughly washing any raw food even if it requires peeling.
Esherichia coli (E.coli) is a kind of bacteria that occurs naturally in our bowel where it lives happily and harmoniously. The problem occurs when this bad news bacterium is transferred to other parts of the body, where it's not quite so welcome. Eat something tainted with E. coli and you'll be grateful to live to regret it. Children, elderly people or anyone with a weak immune system can die from the infection. The rest of us will suffer from symptoms that include at least seven days of severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

Alfalfa sprouts are great & I eat them daily--BUT I grow all my own right here, in my own filtered water. It's very easy to do and the health benefits of sprouts are worth it.
